If you’ve ever struggled to find a sunscreen that doesn’t leave you looking ghostly or feeling greasy, you’re not alone. Sunscreen is a must, but not all formulas are made equal—especially for melanated skin. Beyond other skin care products and even foundation, I’ve found finding the right sunscreen to be the biggest challenge and I know so many of us share that sentiment. So, in this article we’ll break down whether mineral or chemical sunscreen is best for your skin needs?

Mineral Sunscreen (a.k.a. Physical Sunscreen)

How It Works: Mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin and physically blocks UV rays using zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.

Pros:

  • Works immediately—no wait time.
  • Less irritating for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Can actually help reduce inflammation.
  • Safer for the environment (look for “reef-safe” labels).

Cons:

  • The biggest con is its chalky appearance. It can leave a white cast, especially on deeper skin tones (some brands are better than others).
  • Thicker texture, which can feel heavy.
  • Needs more frequent reapplication.

Best Mineral Sunscreens for Melanated Skin:

  • EtaMD UV Elements Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 44 – Lightweight, tinted, and great for all skin tones.
  • ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica SPF 50 – Sheer, fast-absorbing, and ideal for daily wear.
  • Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF 50 – Water-resistant, tinted, and blends well.

Note: there has yet to be a physical sunscreen I’ve encountered that doesn’t have somewhat of a blue/white cast on the skin, especially visible on darker skin types. But these sunscreens are highly regarded and have shown great blending power.

Chemical Sunscreen

How It Works: Absorbs into the skin and converts UV rays into heat before they can do damage. Ingredients include avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone (though some people avoid oxybenzone due to potential health concerns).

Pros:

  • Blends seamlessly—no white cast. Hallelujah!
  • Lightweight and great under makeup.
  • Water-resistant options for swimming and sweating.

Cons:

  • Can cause irritation or breakouts for sensitive skin.
  • Some ingredients (like oxybenzone) have been linked to hormone disruption.
  • Not all formulas are reef-safe.

Best Chemical Sunscreens for Deeper Skin Tones:

  • Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen – Clear gel, zero white cast, doubles as a primer.
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-in Milk – Lightweight and moisturizing.
  • Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 – Created specifically for melanated skin, no white cast, super hydrating.

So… Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreen?

For sensitive skin or a cleaner ingredient list, mineral sunscreen is the better choice—but it has to be a sheer formula if you want to avoid looking ashy. For a weightless feel and zero white cast, chemical sunscreen wins—but choose reef-safe and oxybenzone-free options when possible.

Sonderbeaut’s Pick? A sheer mineral sunscreen for daily protection, but if you struggle with the white cast, a reef-safe chemical sunscreen is a solid backup.

Bottom line? The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear—every single day
