Understanding the Science Behind Morpheus
Morpheus treatments, such as Morpheus8, blend microneedling with radiofrequency energy process created to enhance skin texture and tone. This well-known technology involves the delivery of RF energy through microneedles, which penetrate the skin at adjustable depths, activating the body’s natural collagen and elastin synthesis. This dual action not only smooths out wrinkles and fine lines but also addresses deeper issues like acne scars and stretch marks. With the rising demand for non-surgical procedures, Morpheus stands out due to its ability to target various skin layers with precision. This detailed approach ensures each session is tailored to the individual’s specific needs, making it both versatile and highly effective.
What differentiates Morpheus from other treatments is its versatility. By being able to customize the depth and intensity of the RF energy delivered, it caters to a wide range of skin concerns. This treatment is especially beneficial for those apprehensive about invasive cosmetic surgeries yet looking for significant improvements in skin firmness and elasticity. Since the Morpheus8 treatment combines microneedling with RF energy, it provides a comprehensive solution by addressing both the surface imperfections and deeper skin layers.
Preparing for Your First Morpheus Session
Preparation is key to maximizing the benefits of Morpheus treatments. Listed are 8 common mistakes people make prior to their Morpheus treatments:
Mistake #1: Enjoying the Sun (even if it’s “just walking”) for Two weeks prior to Morpheus Treatment.
As an aesthetic nurse, it’s my responsibility to assess patients before treatment to ensure they are in the proper condition for the procedure. A recent tan—whether intentional or not—is a contraindication for Morpheus8 if it occurred within the last two weeks. This is because the melanin that gives a tan its rich color absorbs heat more readily, increasing the risk of adverse reactions like hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Tanned skin is also often more inflamed and sensitive, further heightening the likelihood of complications. Additionally, treatment settings must be significantly reduced on tanned skin, which can impact the overall results of the procedure.
Many patients mistakenly believe that unless they were actively trying to tan, any darkening of their skin doesn’t qualify as a “real” tan. However, even spending just 30 minutes outdoors can result in a tan. To achieve the best results and minimize risks, it’s essential to commit to avoiding sun exposure as much as possible for at least two weeks before and after your Morpheus8 treatment.
Mistake #2: Retinols… and Glycolics and Salicylics!
By now, especially if you’re well versed in aesthetic treatments, you should know that retinols should be stopped 2 weeks prior to many treatments including morpheus. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that quickens the cell turnover on the skin. However, other forms of chemical exfoliation are AHAs and BHAs including glycolics and salicylic acids. Though on a reduced scale compared to retinols, Glycolic acid and salicylic acid can help exfoliate the skin, making them especially more sensitive to heat based treatments. Avoid AHAs and BHAs for 3-5 days prior to treatment.
Mistake #3: Doing An Intense Workout Right Before Morpheus Treatment
Because you must avoid working out 24-48 hours post morpheus treatment, patients tend to want to get a good workout in a few hours prior to treatment. However, working out increases the circulation of blood and I tend to find the patients who have recently worked out tend to bleed the most. This can also increase swelling and just make the treatment itself an increased bloody mess. It’s best to do an intense workout at least 24hours prior to treatment.
Mistake #4: Avoiding Drinking Water the Day of Treatment
For whatever reason, maybe some patients are nervous and forget to properly hydrate, patients tend to come in for their treatment slightly dehydrated. This can cause increased sensitivity and discomfort as hydrated skin is healthier and tends to withstand more trauma. Drinking lots of water also helps with improving the lymphatic drainage which can further reduce inflammation and swelling.
Mistake# 5: Taking Antibiotics Within Two Weeks of Morpheus Treatment
Certain antibiotics make the skin sensitive to heat and light. This phenomena is called photosensitivity. Examples of these antibiotics are tetracycline, doxycycline or minocycline. It can take 7-14 days to have the photosensitivity effects diminished from the body.
Mistake #6: Self-Tanning Two Weeks Prior To Treatment
Noticing a trend with the two week mark? It’s maybe an overly cautious number but it generally covers many of the activities you should be avoiding before Morpheus. Self-tanner can act similarly to getting a real tan. The chemical from the self-tanner which causing the darkening in the skin can cause a reaction if in contact with the radiofrequency. In can also cause patchiness and discoloration to the skin based on whether there’s an uneven amount of pigment in an area.
Mistake #7: Drinking Alcohol and Popping Pain Relievers
Drinking alcohol within 24 hours of treatment can thin blood and increase inflammation/swelling. Alcohol also dehydrates which can increase sensitivity during treatment. Taking aspirin, Advil and ibuprofen also thin the blood impacting recovery and increasing risk for bruising. Avoid these pain killers for a week prior to treatment. Some herbal supplements can also thin the blood. Vitamin E, and Fish Oil are some of the common ones that should be paused at least a week before the treatment.
Mistake #8: Skincare that sets them Up For Success
The skincare you use leading up to your morpheus treatment can set you up for desired outcomes. Hydrating your skin with hyaluronic acid and ceramides can help improve the barrier to prep your skin for the micro-injuries to come. A product I recommend to all my patients is the skin nectar by Alastin. Skin nectar should be used two weeks prior to and after treatment to remove old collagen and elastin taking up space and make room for new collagen and elastin post treatment. Skin nectar contains antioxidants, its patented Tri-hex technology, and many other unique ingredients that support the skin’s natural healing and improves the skin barrier. These benefits are essential for superb results!
Maximizing Your Results with Aftercare
Aftercare plays an instrumental role in ensuring long-term benefits from Morpheus treatments. It’s advised to cleanse the treated areas with cool water for the first 24 hours, avoiding harsh products or exfoliants during this period. Moisturizing regularly with suitable products like hyaluronic acid can support the healing process and bolster skin hydration. Sun exposure should be minimized; apply broad-spectrum SPF diligently to shield your skin. Additionally, scheduling follow-up treatments at suggested intervals can enhance and sustain the results of this skin rejuvenation method, facilitating continued collagen remodeling and skin firming.
